How YouTube Content ID Works
YouTube Content ID is a feature that automatically detects when your music is used in videos anywhere on YouTube, and routes the ad revenue from those videos to you instead of letting it go uncollected. It’s built into HyDistro’s release process, not a separate product you sign up for. It’s free on paid plans and available as an add-on on the Free plan.
Content ID is only for original music that you fully own. Please read the eligibility rules below before turning it on.
How It Works
- Upload your release as normal. No separate registration form or extra approval step needed.
- Toggle Content ID on. During Step 6 (Monetization) of the upload wizard, switch the Content ID toggle on. HyDistro handles registering your music with YouTube automatically. The toggle is only available for releases that meet the eligibility requirements below. On the Free plan, Content ID is an add-on: after you submit your release, you’ll be redirected to complete payment for it.
- Earn from matches automatically. YouTube continuously scans videos across the platform. When a match is found, ads are placed on that video and the revenue is claimed on your behalf, credited to your HyDistro wallet on your next payout cycle.
What Happens Behind the Scenes
Once you toggle Content ID on:
- Music registered. HyDistro submits your audio fingerprint to YouTube’s Content ID database.
- Videos scanned. YouTube continuously scans new and existing videos for matches.
- Match detected. When your music is found, YouTube flags it and triggers a monetization claim.
- Ads placed. Ads run on the matching video. The video stays live; you receive the ad revenue.
- Revenue paid to you. Earnings are credited to your HyDistro wallet on your next payout cycle.
What’s Eligible
Content ID only works for music that is entirely yours. To be eligible, your release must meet all of these:
- Original music you fully own. You hold 100% of the exclusive rights to both the recording (master) and the composition.
- Human-made. No AI-generated or AI-assisted elements.
- Longer than 20 seconds. Each track must be longer than 20 seconds.
- Delivered to YouTube Music. YouTube Music must be one of the stores on your release.
- Not registered elsewhere. The music is not already in Content ID through another distributor.
What’s Not Eligible
Content ID can’t be used on:
- AI music: any track with AI-generated or AI-assisted elements.
- Leased or non-exclusive beats: beats and instrumentals you don’t own exclusively, even if you paid for a license.
- Non-exclusive sounds: samples, sound effects, production loops, or audio-library and royalty-free material.
- Covers: cover songs of any kind, including karaoke, sound-alike and tribute versions.
- Remixes, mashups, compilations and mixes: including “Best Of” releases and DJ mixes. Each song must be its own track.
- Live recordings: concerts, speeches, shows and events.
- Soundtrack and game audio: audio taken from video gameplay, software visuals or trailers.
- Generic or viral sounds.
- Public domain, Creative Commons or open-license material.
- Unlicensed music.
Important to Know
- It applies to the whole release. When Content ID is on, every track in the release is registered. If one track isn’t eligible, the release can’t use Content ID.
- Your own videos get claimed too. Videos on your own YouTube channel that use your music will also receive a claim. This is not a strike and doesn’t affect your channel’s standing. The revenue simply comes to you.
- Moving from another distributor. Only one distributor can hold Content ID for a track at a time. If your music is already in Content ID elsewhere, have it released there first, then contact HyDistro support to enable it.
- Ineligible releases. Releases found not to meet these requirements may have Content ID removed.
What’s Covered
Content ID applies to a wide range of usage on YouTube, including:
- YouTube Videos: vlogs, tutorials, gaming content, compilations, and other long-form videos
- YouTube Shorts: short-form content, fully included
- Live Streams: DJ mixes, live sets, and events that include your music
- Global Coverage: matches are detected worldwide, even in markets where you have no direct distribution
- Historical Videos: Content ID scans existing videos too, so content uploaded before you registered can still be claimed
- Beats & Instrumentals: producers can earn when their original, exclusively owned beat is used in freestyles, cyphers, etc.
Beyond YouTube
Your registration can also extend to other platforms:
- TikTok: matched usage under TikTok’s commercial music programs can generate revenue
- Facebook: tracked via Meta’s Rights Manager for videos and Reels
- Instagram: covered under the same Meta Rights Manager system as Facebook
Reporting
Content ID is reported on the Analytics page, alongside your other stores and platforms. Just like your streaming earnings, you get a detailed analytics and earnings breakdown for Content ID in the same place. You can see:
- Per-video breakdown: which videos matched, who uploaded them, and how much each earned
- Country-by-country earnings: where in the world your music is being used
- Earnings reports alongside other stores: Content ID revenue appears in the same earnings reports as your other platforms, so you can compare performance across stores in one view
- Cumulative match history: a full record of every claim made on your music

Frequently Asked Questions
Is YouTube Content ID really free? It’s free on Starter, Pro, and Label plans, with no per-release fee, no extra subscription, and no added percentage beyond HyDistro’s standard commission. On the Free plan, Content ID is available as an add-on.
Can I use Content ID on the Free plan? Yes. Content ID isn’t included with the Free plan, but you can add it as an add-on. Toggle it on during upload, and after you submit your release you’ll be redirected to pay for the add-on. Upgrading to Starter, Pro, or Label includes it at no extra cost.
Can I use Content ID on AI-generated or AI-assisted music? No. Any track with AI-generated or AI-assisted elements is not eligible for Content ID. You can still distribute it to streaming stores, but Content ID can’t be enabled.
Can I use Content ID on a beat I leased or bought? No. Content ID requires exclusive ownership. A beat licensed to you non-exclusively, or used by other artists too, isn’t eligible, even if you paid for it.
Can I use Content ID on a cover song, remix, or DJ mix? No. Covers, karaoke versions, remixes, mashups, compilations and DJ mixes aren’t eligible.
Why can’t I switch the Content ID toggle on? Your release may not meet the requirements: a track may be AI-assisted, a cover, shorter than 20 seconds, or YouTube Music may not be selected as a store. Check the eligibility lists above. If you think this is a mistake, contact support.
Do I need to own both the recording and the composition? Yes. You need 100% of the exclusive rights to both the master and the composition.
Will my own videos be claimed? Yes. Videos on your own channel that use your music will receive a claim. It is not a strike and doesn’t affect your channel’s standing; the ad revenue simply comes to you.
My music is already in Content ID through another distributor. What should I do? Only one distributor can hold Content ID for a track at a time. Have it released at your old distributor first, then contact HyDistro support to enable it.
Where do I see my Content ID earnings? On the Analytics page. Content ID is reported alongside your other stores, the same way earnings reports work for the rest of your catalog, with a detailed analytics and earnings breakdown.
What if someone used my music before I registered it? YouTube’s Content ID scans existing videos, not just new uploads. Once registered, claims can be placed retroactively on eligible videos already live on the platform.
Will Content ID remove videos that use my music? No. By default, matched videos are monetized rather than blocked or removed. The video stays up; you receive the ad revenue instead of the uploader.
Does Content ID cover YouTube Shorts? Yes, fully covered.
What happens if someone disputes my claim? HyDistro’s team reviews disputes and defends legitimate claims on your behalf. Valid disputes (e.g., a creator with a proper sync license) are resolved in their favor; fraudulent or mistaken disputes are contested.
When do I get paid for Content ID earnings? On the same payout cycle as your regular streaming royalties: monthly, once YouTube’s payment clears through HyDistro’s system. Withdraw via your usual method (bank transfer, mobile money, or crypto).
Does this affect my YouTube for Artists profile? No. Content ID is separate from your YouTube for Artists / YouTube Music profile. Enabling it has no impact on your official artist channel or streaming numbers.
