Why Are My Royalties Missing?
Why Are My Royalties Missing?
If you’re expecting royalties that haven’t appeared, there’s almost always a straightforward explanation. Work through these in order before assuming something has gone wrong.
1. The reporting delay
This is the most common reason by far. Stores don’t report earnings instantly — there’s typically a 2-month delay before a period’s streaming activity shows up in your royalty reports. Streams from January generally appear around March, February’s around April, and so on.
If your release is recent, or you’re looking for last month’s earnings, it’s very likely they simply haven’t been reported yet. See How Often Is Reporting Updated? for the full timeline.
2. You’re looking at analytics, not royalties
Analytics updates far more frequently than royalty reporting, so it’s easy to see streams in your analytics and expect matching earnings straight away. Those are two different systems on two different timelines — analytics shows activity, royalty reports show finalised, store-reported earnings.
3. Not all streams are earning-eligible
Your raw stream count in analytics won’t match your royalty report exactly. Stores filter out plays that don’t qualify for payment — suspected fake or bot activity, plays that don’t meet minimum duration rules, and other store-specific eligibility criteria. See Why Did My Streams Drop? for a full explanation of this.
4. Your release wasn’t live for the full period
If your release only went live partway through a reporting period, you’ll only earn from the days it was actually available. A release that went live near the end of a month will show much lower earnings for that first period than you might expect.
5. Pending vs available balance
Earnings can be reported but not yet available to withdraw. Check whether what you’re looking for is sitting in your pending balance rather than your available balance — see Why Is My Pending Balance Different From My Available Balance?.
6. Royalty splits
If you’ve set up splits on a release, a portion of its earnings goes to your collaborators rather than to you. Check your splits to confirm what share you’re actually receiving — see How Does Royalty Splitting Work?.
7. Recoupment against an advance
If you have an active Direct Advance, your royalties are being applied toward paying it down. This reduces what lands in your available balance until the advance is fully recouped — see How Does the Recoupment Ledger Work?.
8. HyDistro Funding Charge
Separately from recoupment, if you have an advance there’s a funding charge collected from your earnings over time — see What Fees Apply to Advances?.
9. Currency display
If you’ve changed your preferred currency, amounts are converted at live exchange rates, which can make figures look different from what you expected. This doesn’t mean money is missing — see Why Do Prices Look Different After I Changed My Currency?.
10. Your release wasn’t live on the store you expected
If a particular store never received or never published your release, there’d be no earnings from it. Check your release’s per-platform status in your release details — see Where Can I View Platform Status?.
If none of these explain it
If you’ve been through all of the above and your royalties still don’t add up, contact support with the specific release, the period you’re asking about, and what you expected to see versus what’s showing. Also make sure nobody else has access to your account — see How Can I Keep My Account Secure?.
Summary: Missing royalties usually come down to the standard 2-month store reporting delay, or confusion between analytics (which updates quickly) and royalty reports (which reflect finalised store-reported earnings). Other common explanations include streams filtered out by stores as non-earning-eligible, a release that wasn’t live for the full reporting period, earnings sitting in pending rather than available balance, royalty splits sending a share to collaborators, recoupment or funding charges against an active advance, currency conversion changing how amounts display, or the release never going live on a particular store. If none of these explain the gap, contact support with the specific release, period, and what you expected versus what’s showing.
